Gears in Mortal Komabt 11 have been changed to serve as cosmetics only and what are Augments?

Trevor Traub a core technology producer at NetherRealm Studio recently sat down with Xbox Wire to explain the new Gears and Augments system in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11. Gears will only change the appearance of your character and not provide any stats or advantage but that is where the Augments comes into play.

Mortal Kombat 11 Gears and Augments

NetherRealm introduce the Gear system in their other popular game Injustice 2 which is very similar to Mortal Kombat but with heroes and villains from comic books. The Gear system added character customization with cosmetics but gave the character extra stat such as Increased Strength, Ability, Defence, etc. depending on the Gear worn.

Gear pieces come in different rarity forms with Epic Gears providing the highest stats as well as changing the character appearance. Players were able to equip the Gears in the slots before they would enter a game to give their characters a boost.

Mortal Kombat 11 is using similar Gear system but it will only change the appearance of the character. No stats will be changed whatsoever. The reason for this change is partly due to the main criticisms it received during Injustice 2. Players wanted to look cool and flashy but didn’t want to affect the character’s ability in any way. They hated the fact the Gear they owned look fantastic but didn’t like the stat it gave and therefore discarded the Gear.

It appears that NetherRealm has listened closely to the criticisms and fixed this with Mortal Kombat 11.

Ed Boon the creator of Mortal Komabt delivers his view on the new Gear change “We don’t want people thinking like you know all I can get this gear piece and it does this, it looks cool but I don’t like what it does so it’s a lot more you know, player customization is the big part now.” Gears are purely just cosmetics. In Addition, there will be way more cosmetic with Mortal Kombat 11.

Augments are items that does control the stats of the character. Offering the player the choice to add different Augments to their Gear. Players will be able to change the character appearance yet still have the same stats from the Augments implemented to their own liking.

However, there are some changes that are different from Injustice 2. Augments can enhance the character’s ability instead of base stats, for example, equipping certain Augments to Skarlet will allow her to siphon more life from her blood skills. Furthermore, playing online your stat will not change but cosmetic you choose will be seen by everyone. Keeping it fair and make the fight rely on the player’s skill of the character and not the characters boosted abilities.
