Path of Exile features a rich selection of passive skills that are available to all classes, however, ever since the introduction of the Labyrinth each class now enjoys specializations called Ascendancy. Each class has three Ascendancy class options, that will more considerably enhance and improve your class. The Scion is unique in the fact that she has only one Ascendancy class but takes small snippets from all the other classes.

These subclasses are much more effective than the regular points from the skill tree, and can heavily determine the playstyle of your character. You cannot spend regular passive points in your chosen Ascendancy, but Ascendancy points once earned, can be used on Ascendancy passives. The sole way to select one of the Ascendancy and collect points is to complete the labyrinth located in the Sarn Encampment Act 3.

What is the Labyrinth?

The Labyrinth, in short, is a unique dungeon that contains the altar of Ascendancy. The dungeon is fortified by many dangers including puzzles, traps, monsters, and the main boss Izaro. Guarding the Labyrinth, anyone looking to Ascend must defeat Izaro in three separate battles.

Completing the Labyrinth must be done with one attempt, there are no waypoints or checkpoints within the maze so if you die or leave by choice you’ll have to run the Labyrinth from the start. Once you’ve successfully completed the Labyrinth, you will receive the main reward, the Altar of Ascendancy. This allows you to select and ascend into your characters Ascendency class of choice along with two ascendancy points. The remaining three Labyrinth difficulties, once you reach the altar you’ll be granted two more ascendancy points.

Trials of Ascendancy Trap Types

The trials showcase many different trap types that you’ll encounter once in the Labyrinth. You will only have to complete the trials once per league, this means you can complete them on a singular character and never have to complete them again.

There are six main trap types demonstrated in all of the trials, The traps deal physical damage based on the percentage of your maximum life, so stacking more life will not help towards surviving them. Traps do, however, deal 50% less damage to energy shields. Here are all the traps you’ll encounter.

Spike Traps:

Spikes emerge from a small square either via a timer or pressure plate. They will deal a quarter of the player’s life in damage. The Spike Trap locks the player in place and applies bleeding. Note: you can tell if the Spike Trap uses a pressure plate by looking for a small green circle in the center of the trap.

Sawblades:

Running along a predetermined linear path reversing back onto itself once it reaches the end of its path. Sawblades will deal considerable physical damage the entire time the player is in its range. Sporadically, levers can turn off the Sawblades for safe passage.

Spinning Blades:

These traps, like Sawblades, follow a set path and once it reaches the end of the path reverses back onto itself. Spinning Blades will also deal physical damage over time and can sometimes be diverted using levers or switches.

Furnace Traps:

The Furnace trap heats up the floor with lava at a set time interval. Dealing fire damage over time at a rate of almost 25% of life per second. In general, the trap spawn skeletons which you can use to generate flask charges if need be.

Blade Sentries:

Circular blades that follow a set linear path or cyclical, the unique part to these traps is that they deal more damage the closer you are to the center of the Sentry. There is currently no way to stop or divert these traps.

Dart Trap:

Usually fixed to a wall or a pillar, the Dart Trap fires darts on a timer or when a pressure plate is triggered. If hit, the dart will deal physical damage and applying a poison that slows players movements. A flask of curing will remove the poison and slowing effect.
