Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been released to plenty of favorable reviews, but for a host of reasons the response from fans has been far more mixed. In specific, Russian fans have criticised Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and they (along with many countless others) have frantically begun slating the game on Metacritic, inadvertently destroying its user scores in the process.
The primary reason for the targeting of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is due to its sensitive portrayal of Russians in the game’s campaign. In fact, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign portrays Russians as the “bad guys,” while American forces are represented as the “good guys.”
Taking this hateful narrative a step farther, the second act of Modern Warfare, a stage called Highway of Death, ensure yet another scene that raises eyebrows among critics. In it, participants assume the role of a CIA operative operating in the fictional country of Urzikstan with an armed group of Middle Eastern militants. The objective is the last defence of a village in ruins, with the player pressuring high-caliber rounds against human and mechanised targets.
Players are informed that the Highway of Death is the adverse outcome of a devastating Russian assault that took place decades ago, in which Russian forces slaughtered those escaping from a city under siege. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign shows Russian soldiers committing war crimes.Awkwardly placing the blame for the annihilation of Iraq’s “Highway of Death” to the Russians, even though it was actually caused predominantly by U.S. forces.
Currently, Call of Duty has a user score of just 3.3 on Metacritic.
“Disgusting Russophobic garbage, created only for one thing — stinking anti-Russian propoganda,” writes one reviewer on Metacritic,
“This is just solid nationalism, not a game.” States another reviver. “What a pity that the arrow does not turn in the opposite direction. And about African Americans, would you be able to do the same racist **** dear creators?“
With over 1,300 negative reviews compared to only 600 positives, it’s clear to see the anger of fans all around the world.
